The Philadelphia Eagles traded for Kenjon Barner this offseason from the Carolina Panthers, but the scat back was unable to make the roster out of training camp despite his connection to Chip Kelly from back when he starred for the Oregon Ducks. This link between Kelly and Barner has popped up again, as the National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson reports that Barner visited the Eagles recently, though it’s unclear when the visit took place.

Third-string running back Chris Polk is currently out with a hamstring injury for this week’s game against the New York Giants, but the team already has an excellent change-of-pace RB in Darren Sproles who is a focal point of the offense (he could have a big day on Sunday night, too). Barner’s workout is all about due diligence on the part of Kelly and the Eagles, though it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Kelly decided to give Barner another shot.
That said, Barner hasn’t proven that he can be anything more than depth chart fodder at this point, and it’s telling that nobody has taken a flier on him since Kelly cut him with an injury settlement. The “injury settlement” qualifier, though, makes things interesting, because it makes the possibility of Barner returning to Philly more likely. If he does sign, then it would be because Polk’s injury is significant, but Barner would most likely not play a snap.
