Richard Sherman expects Kam Chancellor, 50-50, to play

Seattle Seahawks star strong safety Kam Chancellor nearly needed surgery on his foot earlier this season, as he was struggling through an injury when the Seahawks uncharacteristically allowed San Diego Chargers veteran TE Antonio Gates to have a big, three-TD display on them. Chancellor followed that up with an excellent week of practice before flat-out dominating the Denver Broncos in the team’s pre-bye overtime win, making plays all over the field and shutting down Julius Thomas in coverage. It was a vintage display from Chancellor that earned him a “Player of the Week” award from us, and it also showed that he wouldn’t need surgery during the bye week.

  • Chancellor still doesn’t need surgery, but he could miss today’s game against Jason Witten and the Dallas Cowboys with a different injury, as he was listed questionable on the injury report with a hip injury. He always looked like a 50-50 call despite some initial optimism, and ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that Chancellor, who never practiced this past week, is a “true” game-time decision (Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll indicated that he would be a game-time decision this week).

This report from Werder isn’t a surprise, but what is especially noteworthy is his statement that Seahawks superstar CB Richard Sherman expects his fellow star DB to play today against Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, DeMarco Murray, and the rest of the Cowboys talented offense. If he doesn’t play, Witten and Romo will surely rejoice, with Murray also getting a bit of a boost. Chancellor’s status needs to be monitored closely after a week of not practicing, and we’ll see if Sherman’s prediction is correct.
