Richard Sherman could make Dallas Cowboys pay

I have no idea what the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff is playing at here, because it doesn’t sound like a wise approach from a pure football perspective, nor does it seem like a sound motivational tactic either. The NFL  Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on GameDay Morning, via NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, that the Cowboys coaching staff has been telling their players that while the Seattle Seahawks have the best defense in the NFL, superstar cornerback Richard Sherman is an overrated player who is helped by teammates such as elite safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.

I hope the Cowboys know that this is a load of crock, because it might one of the dumbest things a coaching staff could tell their players. It would be even worse, of course, if the Cowboys coaches actually believe that Sherman, who is one of the finest defensive playmakers in the game as evidenced by his INT totals, is overrated. Not only is the guy blessed with great size and strength, but he has excellent closing speed, ball skills, and is one of the smartest players in the game at any position. He reads quarterbacks like a safety, and he plays on one side of the field because it makes it easier for the Seahawks defense, and it also allows him to make safety-esque interceptions.

It will be interesting to see if Sherman catches wind of this, because I don’t think the Cowboys want Tony Romo and Dez Bryant to face a pissed Sherman. Bryant is a very talented wide receiver and has a legit shot at doing some damage today, but I honestly can’t see him beating Sherman, who generally only gets beat by especially fast players (T.Y. Hilton) or ridiculously smart WRs with ridiculously accurate QBs (Keenan Allen). Even then, he doesn’t get “torn up”, just “beat”.

The Cowboys statements about Sherman have only served to rile him up and provide us all with some more very interesting talking points on top of the Bryant-Sherman battle. I guess the Cowboys are trying to get their players more confident in challenging Sherman’s coverage, because Jerry Jones stated that the team wants to go after the star CB; we’ll see if he makes them pay, or if Romo and the ‘Boys come away looking like the geniuses in all of this.
