RG3 Injury Update: Jay Gruden says QB is ‘making good progress’

The Washington Redskins are fully expected to name Robert Griffin III their starter once he returns from a dislocated ankle that he suffered in the team’s Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, as Kirk Cousins leads the league in interceptions and hasn’t helped the team win any games. Cousins played well against the Seattle Seahawks and tore up the Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles, but the problem is that he hasn’t displayed enough consistency to Wally Pipp RG3. While consistency and RG3 don’t exactly go together like DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, he’s also far more talented than Cousins, thus the upside trumps all else.

  • RG3 was able to return to practice today, as he’s been cleared to participate in individual drills. The Redskins have no clue when he’ll be back (well, at least that’s what they are telling us, and it’s not like they would give us anything concrete if they could), but there’s speculation that he could return for the Week 8 game against the rival Dallas Cowboys. That’s been the speculated return date for a little bit of time, even if it’s been disputed on several occasions.

What we do know is that Redskins head coach Jay Gruden stated that RG3 has made “good progress” on his ankle, though, of course, there hasn’t been a breakthrough for the unlucky QB. Gruden said, via ESPN NFL Nation’s John Keim, “But I don’t know when that will be yet. That’s hard for me to project. Could be one week, two weeks. Could be five weeks. I don’t know yet. He looks good so far. He’s making good progress, as we knew he would, the type of worker he is. But making progress in the training room and making progress on the practice field are two entirely different things and we just got to make sure he’s right both mentally and physically before he gets back out on the field.”

Given the upside of the Redskins offense with Niles Paul and Jordan Reed at TE supporting an amazing wide receiver corps, RG3 is well-worth the stash for fantasy owners interested in a high-upside, boom-or-bust QB2 who could easily enter the QB1 threshold again with the right blend of consistency, health, and big plays.
