San Diego Chargers Brandon Flowers not practicing

San Diego Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers always looked like a shrewd offseason signing for the then-CB-hungry Chargers, but I don’t think anyone could have anticipated him playing at this high of a level. Flowers just might be playing better than any corner in the league this season, as the finesse corner is showing his customary shutdown coverage to go with solid run defense and plenty of playmaking ability. After being an expensive player who didn’t fit the Kansas City Chiefs scheme, Flowers is a cheap veteran and perfect scheme fit on the Chargers.

  • Flowers suffered a groin injury in last week’s 31-28 win over the Oakland Raiders, and he wasn’t able to return to the game. Fellow talented CB Jason Verrett had the game-sealing interception, and the other bit of good news is that Flowers’s most recent groin injury (he suffered one earlier this year) isn’t overly serious despite the obvious pain he was in. That said, he’s highly questionable for this week’s game, as Michael Gehlken of the U-T San Diego reports that he has missed a second straight practice.

He’s a critical part of the secondary (that probably goes without saying), and the Chargers have to hope that he can play this week against his former team. Flowers would most likely love to stick it to his former employers, as the Chargers will face the Chiefs this week. One consideration that could make things difficult, however, is the fact that they have to make a quick turn-around the following week to face the rival Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football.
