Vontae Davis gets NFL Spin Zone Player of the Week
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and his right-hand man Demaryius Thomas had an exceptional day against the San Francisco 49ers, Tony Romo and DeMarco Murray were superb in a rivalry victory over the New York Giants, and Jason Pierre-Paul was a one-man wrecking ball in that same contest. However, this week’s “Player of the Week” award goes to a cornerback for the second time this season, as Indianapolis Colts top cover man Vontae Davis showed why he is as good as any corner in this league when he’s “on”.

Andy Dalton played a role in this by completing just 18 of 38 passes, but it was Davis who was the main catalyst behind it. The Colts secondary played well as a whole, with Josh Gordy and Greg Toler, who are normally picked on while Davis is busy playing at a high level, supplying strong performances. With A.J. Green out another week, Mohamed Sanu was the lone threat for the Cincinnati Bengals, and he was effectively taken out of the game a week after torching the Carolina Panthers.
Davis helped lead the shutout effort from the Colts defense, as, according to the Pro Football Focus, he allowed Dalton to complete just two passes for 21 yards on seven attempts into his coverage. That’s outstanding, as the former Miami Dolphins star allowed a QB Rating of 39.6. Although he didn’t come up with an interception, the fact that he defended four passes makes things more impressive. Dalton threw more passes that hit Davis than passes that hit his own receivers, as the corner had two times more PDs than receptions allowed.
It seems like Davis has a couple of jaw-dropping performances every year that remind you just how talented this guy is, and Sunday’s dominant display against Dalton and the Bengals was one of those. His most memorable game last year came when he spearheaded the Colts upset of the Denver Broncos by shutting down Demaryius Thomas. While the receivers he faced on Sunday definitely aren’t anywhere near as talented as the “Four Horsemen”, Davis still deserves to be commended for a monstrous display. He made plays of his own and made sure the Bengals couldn’t make any plays on him.
With the way he’s been playing in his first year following the new contract, I think it’s safe to say that Vontae Davis is an elite corner, and I’m glad I ranked him as the sixth-best free agent this past offseason, ahead of Aqib Talib, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and the all the other notable corners.
