Alex Smith has ‘shoulder strain’

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith was as efficient as ever in yesterday’s thoroughly impressive 34-7 blowout victory of the St. Louis Rams, who were combing off of a fluky win over the rival Seattle Seahawks in the previous week. Smith attempted 28 passes, throwing just four incompletions for a completion percentage just over 85%. He averaged 8.1 yards per attempt and allowed the running backs to do the scoring, as Knile Davis had a touchdown with Jamaal Charles dispatching two more to help pace the offense.

  • According to Chiefs official site beat writer BJ Kissel, head coach Andy Reid stated that Smith suffered a “shoulder strain” against the Rams and added that his franchise quarterback should be “fine” going forward. The Chiefs will face the New York Jets next week, and that should be another breezy game for the veteran quarterback.

Smith’s status is worth monitoring, simply because it’s an injury of some level of note to a starting quarterback. That said, this is most likely a non-issue going forward, and he should be considered a lock to suit up against the Jets and a near-lock to have another dominant display. So far this season, the former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller is completing 66.8% of his passes with a copious amount of first downs, as well as a steady average of 7.1 yards per attempt. As usual, Smith gets the job done with little fanfare.
