Ben Roethlisberger gets NFL Spin Zone Player of the Week

Tom Brady helped lead the New England Patriots to a 51-point outburst against the Chicago Bears, but it was Pittsburgh Steelers signal-caller Ben Roethlisberger who had the more impressive day of the two in his team’s 51-point outing against the Indianapolis Colts. Brady and others had excellent weeks, but Roethlisberger has to be the clear winner after setting franchise records for passing yards and touchdowns with 522 and six respectively.

  • Roethlisberger was on fire, taking full advantage of Vontae Davis’s injury by completing 40 of 49 passes with no picks, a 99.0 ESPN TQBR (they might as well have given him a perfect “100”, honestly), and a whopping 10.7 yards per attempt. This was one of the most impressive performances we’ve seen by a quarterback in quite some time, and he showed off his elite arm strength on several occasions. He’s always willing to challenge defenses, and he sure as heck took advantage of the Colts issues in the secondary by stretching them thin.

Five Steelers pass-catchers had five receptions and over 50 receiving yards, with Antonio Brown unsurprisingly leading the way with 10 receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Heath Miller added seven receptions for 112 yards and a TD, and playmaking Clemson rookie Martavis Bryant hauled in two TDs with a total of 83 receiving yards on just five receptions.

522 passing yards is an incredibly high mark, and it’s one of the highest totals in a single-game in NFL history. He deserved every one of those yards, as Roethlisberger played like a man possessed. Derrik Klassen had a really nice break down on Big Ben earlier today, and I’ll let that piece speak for the Steelers star’s day.

I always like to look at the WPA and EPA totals on Advanced Football Analytics to take a quick look at an individual’s impact on his team’s chances of winning, and Roethlisberger’s 32.7 EPA (expected points added) stands out as the best total this past week.

Roethlisberger was 5-7, including a drop, for 158 yards on passes that traveled at least 20 yards downfield, per the Pro Football Focus. The man nailed almost all of his throws, and 522 yards, six TDs, and no picks is incredible against any defense in this league, even one that was missing last week’s “Player of the Week”. Roethlisberger will be the center of attention this week after that performance, but he is still the same player he’s always been…and that isn’t an insult; he’s always been a great, top ten QB capable of these kinds of games.
