Tony Romo Injury: Cowboys QB officially inactive

Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Tony Romo was never expected to play in today’s game against the Arizona Cardinals once it was revealed that he suffered two fractured transverse processes in his back after absorbing a nasty blow in last week’s MNF loss to the Washington Redskins. We saw several reports this morning state that Romo would not be able to play, and the Cowboys have officially listed him as an inactive, per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Former Cleveland Browns first-round pick Brandon Weeden will get the start for the Cowboys today against the Cardinals defense, and it will be interesting to see how he does. Jason Garrett and the Cowboys seem confident in him, as he is no longer a laughingstock after struggling mightily during his time with the Browns. Weeden looked very sharp in the preseason, and he played reasonably well against the Redskins last week.

Romo is locked up as an inactive today, and he could also miss next week’s London game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. That remains to be seen, but it would make plenty of sense to hold him out in order to keep his long-term health in mind, especially if Weeden is able to play well today against the Cardinals defense. Not only are the Jaguars an easy opponent, but London trips are draining. More importantly, the Cowboys have a bye the following week, so that would buy Romo enough rest to heal up before facing the rival New York Giants in Week 12.
