Geno Smith could start next week

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Jets benched Geno Smith in favor of Michael Vick after the second-year West Virginia product absolutely imploded last week against the Buffalo Bills. In his first game with Percy Harvin, Smith went 2-8 with three interceptions, and that was quite honestly one of the worst quarterback performances I’ve ever seen. Smith has shown no maturity, development, or legit QB chops since coming into this league, save for an impressive end-of-the-season run in his rookie year. Since then, he’s been dreadful, and he hasn’t taken advantage of the Jets efforts to add bette weapons around him. With Eric Decker, Harvin, Jeremy Kerley, Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson, and Jace Amaro, a lack of a supporting cast is no longer a viable excuse.

  • Despite Smith’s terrible play, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports, via NFL.com’s Conor Orr, that Smith could be re-inserted into the starting lineup. Although that would probably go against the popular opinion, the fact of the matter is that Vick isn’t a legit starting quarterback in this league and is merely a veteran backup. While Smith has been beyond awful this year, the Jets still need to see if he can turn things around before going back to the drawing board at QB. The only issue is that John Idzik will almost certainly be fired if the Jets keep losing games, so going back to Geno is a risk.

Rapoport reports that Smith could start again as early as next week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (the Jets face the Kansas City Chiefs today), and the Jets have a bye the following week. Going back to Smith actually helps the Jets out long-term, because they could get a franchise QB if he surprisingly turns things around, or they could get a franchise QB by getting a great draft pick if he continues to suck.
