According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rappoport, could New York Jets opt in favor of starting quarterback Geno Smith again by as early as Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Michael Vick will start Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, but team sources have indicated that they recognize that Vick is not a long-term solution.

For the Jets to revert to Smith won’t be pleasing to fans, but it would give the team a clear indication as to whether or not he will have a future with New York. Geno Smith has already been benched twice by the New York Jets in 2014, against the San Diego Chargers and following a disastrous first quarter against the Buffalo Bills.

Rappoport also reported Sunday that it is likely that Smith will be inactive against Kansas City with with a shoulder injury. In the event that Geno Smith can’t go, Matt Simms will assume of the role of backup quarterback for the Jets.

This season, Smith has completed 56% of his passes and thrown for 1,370 yards. He has also recorded 7 touchdowns to go along with 10 interceptions.

The best thing that the New York Jets can do is go back to Geno Smith. They don’t want to go through this trouble again in 2015, and finding out now whether or not he can be a franchise quarterback is the most important thing for GM John Idzik and the Jets. New York is in line to receive a high draft pick in next year’s draft, so taking a quarterback in the first round won’t be completely out of the realm of possibilities.
