Detroit Lions Nick Fairley without timetable
Detroit Lions standout defensive tackle Nick Fairley suffered a potentially serious right knee injury in the team’s 22-21 last-gasp London victory over the Atlanta Falcons, and his injury made an otherwise incredible comeback game bittersweet. Fairley had been criticized for his weight issues and lack of motivation, but the Lions lit a fire under him before the season by not picking up his option. It paid off, as Fairley was flat-out dominant in run defense over the first half of the season, and he was also his usual, disruptive self up the middle on passing downs.

Unfortunately, Fairley’s status going forward remains uncertain due to the knee injury, and ESPN NFL Nation’s Michael Rothstein reports that Lions head coach Jim Caldwell doesn’t have a set timetable for Fairley’s return. It’s definitely concerning news for the Lions, though they will be getting two boosts with rookie Kyle Van Noy activated off of the short-term IR, and impressive DT C.J. Mosley has been activated after serving a two-game suspension for a marijuana-related incident in London.
Peter King reported after the injury occurred that Fairley will miss 4-5 weeks with a sprained MCL and PCL, and, at this point, that’s what we have to be hoping for, since Caldwell didn’t rule out the possibility of Fairley’s knee injury being season-ending. We’ll have to keep a close eye out for all updates, because Fairley is clearly in limbo.
