Donnie Avery could practice this week

The Kansas City Chiefs took care of business yesterday, beating the New York Jets 24-10 behind another chain-moving display from the offense, with Jamaal Charles and Travis Kelce punching in touchdowns. Dwayne Bowe continues to carry the offense at the wide receiver position, as he led the team with six receptions but did have less receiving yards than Kelce, who is the team’s biggest threat in their methodical passing attack. Both Bowe and Kelce are tasked with leading the passing attack, but this need has been increased by the injury to Donnie Avery, who has been out since Week 4 with a lingering, week-to-week groin injury. While Avery is a below-average No. 2 receiver in every sense, he’s much better than the likes of A.J. Jenkins and would aid the Chiefs offense upon his return.

  • According to the Kansas City Star’s Terez A. Paylor, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid stated that Avery could return to practice this week as the Chiefs gear up for a Week 10 battle with the Buffalo Bills, who are coming off of a bye week. The Bills could make life tough for Charles on the ground, but they are susceptible to getting beat through the air despite a breakout season from cornerback Corey Graham.

Avery caught 14 passes for 156 yards before his injury, and a return to practice this week would signify a return to the starting lineup. His status is worth monitoring as the week progresses, and the fact that he will provide the Chiefs offense with a significant boost at WR tells you just how underwhelming the Chiefs depth is at the position.
