Ryan Mallett named Houston Texans starter
The Houston Texans acquired Ryan Mallett from the New England Patriots in late August, as the Texans shipped out a mere conditional seventh-round pick to New England for the former third-round pick out of Arkansas. It was barely any compensation for the Patriots, who could have easily traded Mallett for more had they dealt him earlier, but they were high on him as Tom Brady’s backup and decided to keep him around. An expiring contract this season, Mallett was replaced and outplayed by rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the preseason, and Mallet has failed to shine in the preseason.

When the Texans acquired Mallett, many people speculated that he would eventually take over as the starting quarterback with only veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tom Savage standing in his way. That’s happened today, as the Houston Chronicle’s Brian T. Smith reports that Texans head coach Bill O’Brien has officially named the strong-armed passer as his starting quarterback.
The Texans will face off against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11 following their bye, and it will be interesting to see what Mallett can do with an elite WR duo at his disposal in Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins, who has been hot lately. Mallett’s chance to shine is fully legit, and it comes after O’Brien failed to give Fitzpatrick a vote of confidence on Monday following a dreadful performance in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Fitzpatrick completed less than half of his passes in Week 9, though he’s actually been better than expected overall this season.
For the Texans, this is all about seeing what they have in Mallett, since they traded for him for a reason, and that reason wasn’t to sit on the bench behind a known commodity and stopgap.
