Jimmy Smith done for the year
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith was a touted prospect when he came out of Colorado, and he’s certainly lived up to his billing in his fourth season in the league. Smith dealt with consistency issues to begin his career, but he was always expected to struggle with technique as a raw prospect. After consistently showing improvement with each successive season, Smith broke out in a big way this year, and rise coincided with disappointing play from last year’s stud CB Lardarius Webb, making Smith the Ravens No. 1 CB for this season. He’s emerged as a true shutdown corner, and our Derrik Klassen had an excellent, in-depth look at the rising 26-year-old.

According to the Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson, Ravens team spokesman Kevin Byrne announced that Jimmy Smith is done for the year with foot injury, as he needed season-ending surgery. It’s terrible news for the Ravens, as they no longer can boast of having a top-notch secondary. Webb and Will Hill are two excellent talents, but the Ravens are now thin at cornerback for the rest of the season instead of just being thin for a few more weeks.
Smith was expected to miss a few weeks and return in Week 12 or 13, but I don’t think anyone predicted a season-ending foot injury for the star cornerback. Hopefully he can be back and better than ever next season, and there’s no reason to doubt him anymore. After notching an impressive 16 passes defended last season, Smith already had eight before going down with an injury in Week 8 against the rival Cincinnati Bengals.
