Patrick Willis ‘very, very doubtful’

San Francisco 49er star inside linebacker Patrick Willis is officially listed as questionable on the injury report, but he has never been expected to play in today’s marquee matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Willis injured his toe back in Week 6 against the rival St. Louis Rams, and he has been out since. If he misses today’s game, then he will have missed over a month with the toe injury.

  • The NFL Network’s Jeff Darlington reports, via Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, that Willis is “very, very doubtful” to play against the Saints, and it sounds like we should fully expected another start from rookie Chris Borland, who has been busy making plays in Willis’s absence. Despite his lack of size, Borland was praised heavily as a potential impact player during the pre-draft process, and he’s done nothing but impress with his instincts and ability to make plays as a run defender.

Hopefully Willis can return for next week’s game against the New York Giants, who will most likely have feature back Rashad Jennings back in the fold by then. The 49ers defense will continue to miss their star player, and he should be considered “out” at this point in time. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s comment that Willis was more “doubtful” than “questionable” served to show that the 49ers were never optimistic about his chances at playing.
