Ronnie Hillman Injury: Broncos RB ‘day-to-day’?

Denver Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman got off to a hot start when he first replaced Montee Ball, who will make his return from a groin injury next week, as he turned in strong performances against the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and San Diego Chargers. He went for over 100 yards in two of those performances, and he would have easily cleared 100 against San Francisco if given around 20 carries. However, Hillman cooled off big time against the New England Patriots and, before his injury, the Oakland Raiders, and he had some struggles in pass pro.

Hillman left yesterday’s game with an injury that wasn’t initially specified, but he was seen sporting a limp following the game. It was reported earlier today by the Denver Post’s Mike Klis that Hillman would miss at least two weeks, but it sounds like he could end up missing less time than that.

Although it isn’t concrete, it does come from the horse’s mouth. According to Broncos official site beat writer Andrew Mason, head coach John Fox stated that Hillman has a left foot sprain and will be “day-to-day” going forward. That sounds noticeably better than “at least two weeks”, which is more “week-to-week” than “day-to-day”.

With Ball’s return and the big game from C.J. Anderson, it might not matter how long Hillman is out, because there’s a chance he won’t get his starting job back. That said, he put together three impressive games, and he shows that the Broncos have some nice depth at RB; I buy it fully when they say they are going with the “hot hand” approach, though they have to be careful with that and allow someone to get into a rhythm.
