C-. Along with a sputtering offense, the Chargers special teams was a combination of good and bad. In terms of punt coverage, newly-acquired Mat McBriar (in place of the injured Mike Scifres) did pretty well. McBriar averaged 49.8 yards per punt with a 54-yard long.
In terms of punt and kickoff coverage though, the Chargers could have played better. Emmanuel Sanders and Wes Welker averaged nine yards per return on punts, while Marvin Austin and Omar Bolden averaged 21.7 yards per kickoff return. Bolden took back a kick for 33 yards.

As for PK Nick Novak, the Chargers kicker cost the Bolts key points. The kicker went 1-3 on the day with two missed field goals from 46 and 37, kicks typically in Novak’s range. On the other side of the field, former Bucs kicker Connor Barth made five out of his five field goals.
While there is not much you can do to block field goals, Nick Novak should have made all of his field goal tries. Had he made them, the score would have been 22-16, with the potential for a game-winning touchdown.
. ST. San Diego Chargers. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS SPECIAL TEAMS
