This season was a big step forward for the Miami Dolphins. Although the team failed to make the postseason for a sixth straight year, one thing that could be labeled as a positive was the play of the offense. As a group, the offense scored the most points since the 1995 season. While the passing game and Ryan Tannehill might get a majority of the credit, one player who deserves countless recognition is third year running back Lamar Miller.
Drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 draft, Miller was given the opportunity as the premiere running back for the Dolphins. In his first two seasons, Miller often struggled. His ability to find the open lanes and hit them with speed was questioned, resulting in the signing of Knowshon Moreno. Moreno, who was brought in as the new starter on a one-year deal eventually tore his right ACL for the second time in the third game of the season.
A rejuvenated Miller responded well to the ample amount of playing time. The running back spot was once again his for the taking and he made the most of his opportunities. Miller finished with a career high 1,099 yards and eight touchdowns. He helped provide the Dolphins with a much needed ground game, allowing them to open up the offensive playbook to a greater extent.
Although Miller played extremely well for Miami, the running back spot is still an area of concern. Moreno will most likely not be back in a Dolphins uniform while Daniel Thomas and Damien Williams are questionable two’s moving forward.
