4. Finding A Third Wide Receiver

Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate both had a solid season in 2014. Johnson missed three weeks and was on the field as a decoy in two others, but still managed to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark, and was even voted to the Pro Bowl. Tate had a career year in Detroit, catching 99 balls for 1,331 yards with four touchdowns. He also did a fantastic job of stepping up in Johnson’s absence and leading the Lions in two come-from-behind wins against the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.

However, beyond that there are a lot of question marks at wide receiver in Detroit. Jeremy Ross often filled the void for the Lions this season, and even came up with some clutch catches when we needed him most. His kick return game seemed to take a slight hit though, especially as the year went on. We also seen his fumbling issues return, like in the London game vs. the Atlanta Falcons. Fumbles were also the reason he was let go of in Green Bay.

There is also Corey Fuller and Ryan Broyles on the roster. Fuller had a few shining moments throughout the season, but Broyles was inactive for a majority of the year. What the future holds for these two is unclear at this point, but neither did enough in 2014 to lock up the WR3 spot going into next season.

Detroit could look to the NFL Draft for an upgrade or they could add someone via free agency. Talent at the wide receiver position is deep around the NFL and only looks to be getting even deeper. Will the Lions go with one of their current young receivers in 2015, or will they look to upgrade the position?
