6. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots
Brady put up a masterful performance against Baltimore, save for an interception near the end of the first half. He again validated what he’s been famous for, above all others: playing exceptional football in the postseason. He’s doing so much with seemingly so little on offense outside of Rob Gronkowski. Yes, the Patriots do have Julian Edelman. But Tom Brady is the reason why he performs so well.
Brady posted a quarterback rating of 99.3 (an ESPN QBR of 80.1 out of 100 – I still don’t know how that is calculated, but I can tell you that 80.1 is exceptional). While coaches would never want their quarterback throwing 50 passes, Brady did so, and did so effectively: he completed 33 of them for 367 yards and three touchdowns.
New England hosts Indianapolis in the AFC title game this Sunday. Brady has got the best of that matchup lately but Indianapolis’s defense may be a little tougher than Baltimore’s, given the way that unit has been playing lately.
