It’s a long shot, I understand that. Consider this for a second though. The Buccaneers are picking at number one. They have a new offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, who has worked with a drop-back passer in Matt Ryan for the past three seasons. I’m not so sure that Mariota fits that system, and they could very opt in the direction of Winston. Then, the Titans, who appear to have a young talent in Zach Mettenberger, will pick second. Assuming that they see the upside of Mettenberger, the other three teams picking between the Titans and the Jets don’t truly have a need at the quarterback position.
Mariota is exactly what the Jets need. Unlike current quarterback Geno Smith, Mariota provides a dual-threat to the team, like the old Michael Vick. Yes, Smith is a capable runner, but as a passer, Mariota is far superior. He has a quick release, which allowed his Oregon Ducks to keep opposition off balance. Obviously Oregon’s system had a major impact on his success, but Marcus Mariota is the real deal. New York would not only be grabbing a phenomenal talent, but a player that can set a great example in the locker room as well.
