8. Address the TE position.
The Packers decision at tight end could depend largely on how the rest of their offense shakes out. If the worst-case scenario takes place and Randall Cobb signs elsewhere, an upgrade at TE could be a logical place to start in rebuilding Aaron Rodgers’ arsenal.
Richard Rodgers was somewhat of a surprised pick in the 3rd round in last year’s draft, with some calling it a bit of a reach. Catching 20 balls for 225 yards in year one, Rodgers looked better than his numbers would suggest by the end of the season and should be the starter entering 2015. His abilities to create first downs and catch nearly every balls thrown his way are valuable, but does Green Bay want more from the position?
The absence of Jermichael Finley was evident throughout 2014 for the Packers, especially early on. Not only did he represent a safety blanket for Rodgers, but his ability to stretch the field vertically (something you won’t often see from Rodgers) drew safety coverage away from Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Without Finley, many of his short-route receptions turned into screen passes to Eddie Lacy.
Green Bay’s cap situation is good, but not great. They may not have the luxury of spending big at the position, but I would not be surprised to see them chase a larger “athlete” at TE to pair with Richard Rodgers long-term.
