4.  Who is the nose tackle?

My expectations were cautiously high for B.J. Raji entering the season.  On a one-year contract he had plenty to prove and plenty of motivation ($) to do so, but his season ended before it began when the Boston College product suffered torn biceps and was place on injured reserve.

Letroy Guion and Josh Boyd were plugged in to fill the position, and by season’s end, Guion had shaken off the rust to become a quality player along the line.  He is able to fill the gaps while still remaining light on his feet when moving side-to-side.

Now, Raji and Guion are both free agents.  Nose tackle could very well be a position that Green Bay addresses in the draft, but value is difficult to find for such a unique position.  The Packers do not just seek the classic immovable body at nose tackle, they’d like a player who is agile and able to spill through holes.

Don’t rule out the return of Raji and Guion, but this position could be a candidate for an upgrade if the salary cap situation allows.  The centre of the front seven needs to improve as a whole for the Packers in their 3-4 scheme.  When it does, the pieces that move around it will be able to shine without needing to support the interior.
