Wide Receiver – Green Bay’s WR production was among the most top-heavy in the NFL in 2014. While Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb had career years, Jarrett Boykin was a ghost and rookie Davante Adams struggled with some of the inconsistencies you would expect from a raw player.
Nelson caught 98 passes on the season for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns, continuing to be one of the league’s sneakiest deep threats while also improving at moving the chains on shorter downs. The odd drop still plagues Nelson, and may have cost the Packers a game in Buffalo this season, but you could count on one hand the receivers who are better than him in the NFL today.
Randall Cobb dominated in 2014, as well, blowing all of his career highs out of the water. He turned 91 receptions into 1,287 yards and 12 TD, and there’s a legitimate argument to be made that he is a more valuable receiver to Green Bay than Nelson is, especially when factoring in age. Cobb is still just 25, one of the dozen reason’s he’ll be striking it rich on the free agent market this offseason.
Past the two studs, though, Green Bay got very little. Davante Adams did come on strong towards the end of the season with a breakout game against the Dallas Cowboys, and looks to be a lock for the #3 position next season assuming Cobb returns. Boykin, on the other hand, caught just three balls on the season. Entering free agency himself, he could be quickly replaced by Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis or an incoming rookie draft pick.
