3. Bill Belichick, 1991-1995, 2000-Present
The only current NFL head coach on this list is the New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick. He is in the midst of putting together one of the most special coaching careers in NFL history. Scandals aside, and there will be people that mention them, what he’s done with New England has been nothing short of extraordinary. In 20 years as an NFL head coach (15 and counting with New England) he was won four Super Bowls and six AFC Conference Championships. He is also a three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year (2003, 07, 10). Some people are claiming that Belichick is now the greatest coach of all-time. I’m not ready to go that far just yet.
His all-time winning percentage is .659 (.729 with the Patriots) and he’s had just one losing season with the Pats. Although he did have four such seasons as the Browns’ head coach; although no one is holding that against him. He’s won an impressive 12 division championships in 20 years as head coach, which is tied for the second-most of any coach on this list — and he’s still coaching. His playoff winning percentage is a sparkling .709 after a whopping 31 postseason contests. Need I say more?
Belichick’s legacy will always have a shadow of doubt surrounding it, but I don’t think anyone disputes that he’s among the league’s all-time elite head coaches. Prior to the 2015 championship he already led the Patriots to the only dynasty of the new millennium. If he wins another ring, he could definitely start building a case to move up this list in a big way.
