FSU. Jameis Winston. 1. player. 48.
The arrow seems to be pointing in Jameis Winston’s favor now as the first overall pick on April 30th in Chicago. I haven’t been his loudest supporter over the past two months, largely due to his off-field concerns, but the less I talk and the more I listen, I become increasingly open to the idea.

Winston handled the media spotlight well at the Scouting Combine this past weekend. Surely he was coached, but regardless, he has done enough to shift some eyes back to his on-field product, which is where he possesses immense potential. Winston appears even larger than his 6’4″, 231 pound listing, and his athleticism will play as a plus attribute in the NFL. Most importantly, Winston comes from a pro-style offense under Jimbo Fisher at FSU.

This gives Winston the advantage of huddling and progressing through his reads as a drop-back passer, which is an immediate advantage over Marcus Mariota’s history in Oregon’s spread offense. Lovie Smith and the Bucs staff will find comfort in this, and it could lessen the learning curve that Winston has ahead of him.

His two red flags are the off-field issues and turnovers. Some of the questions around his personality can be attributed to maturity alone. Put fame, the adoration of an entire university campus and the national spotlight on any college student, and you’ll see some things you don’t like. Several issues will run deeper than that, however, and he will face tough questioning in coach’s interviews. Will the Bucs feel comfortable keeping Winston in Florida, just a four hour drive from Tallahassee?

If they are, Winston is their man. His turnovers can be worked on, and the Bucs would rather a quarterback who slings the football than one who hesitates, holding on to the football in the pocket and taking sacks. Winston will step in to a situation with Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans out wide, and if the Bucs can add another couple of pieces around him, it could be a special match.
. QB
