OT. Florida. D.J. Humphries. 25. player. 87.
With Byron Bell set to hit free agency after a shaky year protecting Cam Newton’s blind side, the Carolina Panthers need to invest in a long-term insurance plan for Superman. Enter Charlotte native D.J. Humphries, who has shot up draft boards faster than anyone in this entire class.

Humphries was originally dismissed from any early-round conversations due to his size, as he often played tackle while hovering around 290 pounds at Florida. He arrived at the Scouting Combine weighing 307 pounds, however, and is a hot name in terms of long-term left tackle prospects. Humphries excels with his short-area mobility to track pass-rushers through their moves and plays with a nasty, aggressive style that I love to see in a franchise tackle.

The issues holding Humphries back are largely related to technique, as he gets caught leaning out of position often and needs to do some work with his hand use. These are all coachable, though, and his great upside will help the Panthers to overlook them.

Carolina is in a similar situation to the Kansas City Chiefs, where they can shore up their offensive line in round one and grab an offensive weapon in round two or three. Kelvin Benjamin needs a running buddy, but that position is plenty deep. Players with the potential to stick at left tackle for their entire career are a rarity, and this Humphries pick will help the Panthers to make another strong run in a very weak division.
