All-Time Greats: Honorable Mentions
Before we jumped into the Packers’ list of all-time great players I wanted to, at the very least, mention a few names that just missed the cut. Green Bay’s football history is impressively rich and its history dates back to before the Great Depression. Thus, it is quite impossible to fit every great or significant name into 30 slots.
Below are the top ‘honorable mentions’ that just missed the cut.
10. Johnny “Blood” McNally, Running Back, 1929-1933, 35-36 (Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee)
9. Al Harris, Cornerback, 2003-2009
8. John Brockington, Running Back, 1971-1977
7. Earl “Curly” Lambeau, Running Back, 1921-1929 (Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee)
6. Darren Sharper, Safety, 1997-2004
5. Billy Howton, Wide Receiver, 1952-1958
4. Cal Hubbard, Tackle, 1929-1935 (Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee)
3. Antonio Freeman, Wide Receiver, 1995-2001, 2003
2. Fred “Fuzzy” Thurston, Guard, 1959-1967
1. Clarke Hinkle, Fullback, 1932-1941 (Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee)
All of these players had a profound impact on the history of the Green Bay Packers, but as previously stated, not all great players could make the top-30. The four Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees have been noted above. Of course, there are many other players in the history of the Green Bay Packers that are more than worthy of remembrance, too.
Lambeau didn’t make it in the top-30 for his playing abilities alone, but he certainly is one of the largest names in the history of the franchise. The Packers’ stadium, Lambeau Field, is appropriately named after the co-founder and first head coach of the franchise.
Current Players: Here are a few great players that have, at least, a chance at jumping into the Packers’ top-30 players of all-time list at some point in the future: WR Jordy Nelson, G Josh Sitton, RB Eddie Lacy, CB Sam Shields, and WR Randall Cobb.
Alright, are you ready to jump into a detailed ranking of the greatest players of one of the greatest franchises in American professional sports history? If not, back away slowly and come back when your passion for the Packers is equal to this mammoth examination of Green Bay’s all-time legends.
