Green Bay Packers: Ranking the top 30 players in franchise history
By Daniel
27. Arnie Herber, Quarterback, 1930-1945
All Packers fans knew that there were going to be multiple quarterbacks on this list, however, not all fans may have thought Arnie Herber would be on it. Green Bay has an amazing history at the quarterback position that many people trace back to legend Bart Starr, but that couldn’t be more wrong. The first great signal caller in Packers history was none other than Herber. He led Green Bay to four NFL Championships from under center.
Herber was an intricate part of the NFL’s forward pass evolution as he threw to the unparalleled Don Hutson. He was one of the first quarterbacks to air it out consistently and he led the NFL passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions three times each. He also led the league in passing yards per game four times. He threw for 81 career touchdowns in an era when throwing the ball was still partially seen as a gimmick. In three playoff games at quarterback he threw four touchdown passes.
He was a true pocket passer, although he did run for and receive three touchdowns while in Green Bay, too. Herber was named First-Team All-American once, went to one Pro Bowl, and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is the first of an amazing legacy of quarterback play in Green Bay. He deserved to be remembered for that.
