Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com reported on March 10th that the Raiders signed Buffalo Bills tight end Lee Smith on a three year deal worth $1.91 million. In four years with the Bills, Smith has a total of 20 receptions and 144 yards so it is obvious that he was not brought in as a target for Derek Carr. Where Smith’s value lies is his ability to pass and run block in offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s run heavy offense.

Current starting tight end Mychal Rivera is a solid receiving option but he is not renowned for his blocking ability. Smith is considerably bigger than Rivera at 6’6″ and 265lbs and will add some much needed beef to Raiders offensive line when brought in to the game. His height can also make him a intriguing red zone target out of goal line packages. The Raiders lacked a true blocking tight end last season and Lee Smith fills that need.
