Worst: Throwing An Interception On His First Attempt

After losing his job to Derek Carr, Matt Schaub did not see any game action under center in the final game of the preseason or in the first 7 weeks of the season. He was firmly entrenched as the number 2 quarterback on the roster, although some fans thought he should have been QB3 behind Matt McGloin.

Schaub looked comfortable carrying the clipboard and fans were pleased with Derek Carr’s play. He was a largely forgotten man until this moment against the Cleveland Browns.

The Raiders received the opening kickoff and were driving from their own 20 but stalled on the Cleveland 37 yard line. Head Coach Dennis Allen sent out the field goal team for a 55 yard attempt. A long kick by any measure but nearly a chip shot for Sebastian Janikowski. Instead of attempting the kick, Janikowski motioned out wide and holder Matt Schaub stepped back to receive the snap.

The snap was a bit low but one Schaub should have handled easily. Instead he fumbled it, picked it up, scrambled around for a few seconds deep in the backfield, and heaved the ball downfield to be intercepted by the Browns. It was his first passing attempt of the season and it followed the trend of many of his others recently as it resulted in a turnover. One would think that this was rock bottom for Schaub in a Raider uniform but it was just the beginning.
