In recent years, the most obvious position of need on the Cardinals’ roster has been inside linebacker. The addition of Weatherspoon in free agency could certainly help their cause at the position, but with Foote joining the coaching staff, and Daryl Washington’s future with the team an unknown, the Cardinals could consider the right prospect at the position in the first round. On paper, Eric Kendricks looks like a very strong fit.
Kendricks was a three year starter in college who dominated in his senior season. Last year, Kendricks totaled 149 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and three interceptions on his way to taking home Butkus Award, which is given out annually to the best linebacker in college football.
Kendricks is a very smooth and dependable player who always seems to be around the ball. He has good athleticism, natural instincts and great play recognition that allows him to make many plays against both the run and pass.
The Cardinals have really struggled to defend the tight end position in recent years. Pass coverage is Kendricks’ best skill as a linebacker. He showed great ability to defend tight ends, running backs and even the occasional wide receiver in college. His smooth and natural athleticism gives him an edge over most players in coverage in the middle of the field. Kendricks would undoubtedly help the Cardinals at defending the tight end position.
Kendricks is a talented player who is also advanced at reading opposing offenses. He would be a potentially dynamic player who would fill a huge position of need for Arizona, and is clearly someone they should consider with the 24th pick.
