As mentioned before, the Cardinals had the 31st ranked rushing attack in the NFL last season. Ellington was asked to carry the load for Arizona, but staying healthy was a major issue for Ellington, and it is now fair to wonder whether he can carry a full load.

The Cardinals have showed interest in some key free agents at the running back position, and have even been rumored as strongly targeting Adrian Peterson in a trade. It is obvious that they are looking for another running back, at least one who compliments Ellington.

If the Cardinals do not land Peterson, selecting a running back in the first round is certainly possible. There are two potential first round running backs in this draft. Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley are both impressive running back prospects who are likely to have great NFL careers. While Gordon is great, Gurley sticks out as a perfect fit for Arizona, and he should be under consideration for them in the first round of the draft.

Gurley is a very physical back with great ball carrier vision. Head coach Bruce Arians typically prefers a powerful, downhill back, and Gurley is just that. His power would compliment Ellington’s shiftiness very well, but he would be selected to be the main ball carrier for the Cardinals going forward.

On top of great physicality and power, Gurley has impressive speed and quickness in the backfield. He is a smart runner who knows how to hit the hole, and shift his weight in and out of cuts. Gurley also shows great change of direction speed.

Most rookie running backs struggle in pass protection, and that is what holds them back int he NFL. Gurley has shown impressive skills in that department for such a young back, and his pass protection skills should translate to the NFL very well. He is also a smooth receiver out of the backfield with soft, natural hands.

Gurley has a ton of upside as an NFL running back, but the downside is certainly there as well. He tore his ACL in November of 2014, which will always make teams take another look. Gurley’s knee is a huge question mark for him in the draft process, and it is fair to wonder how much production he will give his team in his rookie season.

Gurley is an impressive athlete who is going to be a major force to be reckoned with in the NFL. If he is available at the 24th pick, and the medicals check out, the Cardinals need to strongly consider Gurley. He is a guy who can take their offense to the next level.
