Round Five: Ray Drew, DE, Georgia

Drew’s story is one that I think will appeal to Chip Kelly. He was highly touted coming out of high school and went to Georgia expecting to be a stand-out linebacker. But he was a ‘bust.’

Not because he couldn’t play. But because he wouldn’t stop growing.

Eventually, the team stuck him (all 6’5”, 285 lbs of him) at defensive end where he flourished as a senior.

His obvious size matches well with his quick first-step and his tough, hard-nosed style.

His lack of experience at the position, of course, means that his technique is raw and he will require some work. But I have a feeling Chip Kelly would say something like, ‘That’s why he’s available to us in the fifth round. If his technique was perfect there’s no way we’d have any shot at drafting him.’

The Eagles are fairly thin on prototypical 3-4 defensive ends (Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thorton are entrenched as starters and are both tremendous players, but are essentially the only guys at the position on the roster) and Drew would be a high-upside project that could provide depth for the time being.
