Sixth Round: Nick Marshall, CB, Auburn
The Eagles need help at cornerback and Marshall’s story is one of the more interesting in the draft. People know him, of course, as a quarterback. And a pretty darn successful one at that.
But realizing that his quarterbacking days would likely end in college, Marshall has begun the transition back to corner where he showed off his skills at Senior Bowl week.
What he showed? Was rawness. Flashes of true ability hiding underneath a complete lack of understanding about how to play the position.
But Marshall was a corner. So he may well learn quickly. He originally went to Georgia to play on the defensive side of the ball. He had an off the field issue, was removed from the team, left for junior college, played quarterback there… and the rest has been history.
But so, now, are Marshall’s quarterbacking days.
Marshall’s upside resides in his size (6’1, 210 lbs) and his length. As well as his experience as a quarterback: Understanding routes and having a larger-picture vision about where defenses line up and where quarterbacks might look to go with the football.
This pick is a true flier.
But in the sixth round? There’s nothing wrong with taking a big swing at a position where you need a lot of help.
