OLB. Missouri. Shane Ray. 13. player. 15. Much like Randy Gregory, I hesitate to express as much excitement in regards to Ray as you’ll see from many others. The talent is there, though, and players with his electric physical skills off the edge won’t fall far.
The Saints need to get younger, cheaper and more talented across the board, so this draft will be a critical turning point for their franchise. Rob Ryan’s defense is desperate for help, and Shane Ray could step in from day one as a pass rush specialist as he develops the deeper aspects of his game. Ray ran in the mid 4.6’s in the 40 yard dash at his pro day, and has one of the best first steps off the snap at his position.

Ray matches these physical gifts with quality instincts in the open field, but his challenge at the NFL level will be disengaging from bigger and stronger blockers. The continued development of his pass-rush moves will aid in this as he will be forced to win battles with his skill, not his size.
