Perhaps the most obvious need on the Cardinals’ roster is the inside linebacker position. Sean Weatherspoon is an intriguing option who the team brought in during the free agency period, but his ability to stay healthy is a major concern at a position filled with question marks.

If Daryl Washington returns to the team from suspension, and if 2013 second round pick Kevin Minter improves his play on the field (both big “ifs”) the Cardinals could be alright at inside linebacker.

Regardless, it would not hurt for the team to try and find some late round value at the position, at least for depth purposes. But it is more likely that they could use an impact type player.

Ben Heeney is a very high motor player who has great instincts and could make an immediate impact for Arizona.

He was a three-year starter at middle linebacker for Kansas, where he led his team in tackles during all three of those seasons. Heeney was a Second Team All-Big 12 selection in his sophomore and junior seasons, and took home a First Team selection after 127 tackles (12 for loss) during his senior year.

Heeney is a smart player who can play the read-and-react game very well. He has nice speed in the middle of the field, and is underrated overall athletically.

While a bit undersized at 6-foot, 231 pounds, Heeney is a very physical player who almost never misses a tackle. His hard-nosed, never say die style cannot be overstated, as Heeney was consistent involved in plays that he had no business being a part of.

In recent years, the Cardinals have struggled at defending the tight end position. Their inside linebackers certainly deserve at least a portion of that blame.

Heeney has a lot of experience playing man-to-man coverage in the pass happy Big 12, and while not all of the results were positive, he does show natural coverage skills. Also, Heeney has very good ball skills for a linebacker, naturally being able to break up and even intercept many passes.

If nothing else, Heeney will be a high character player who is always giving you his best effort. He has the upside of being a good NFL starting inside linebacker, and his skill set seems to fit well for the Cardinals’ 3-4 defense.

For a prospect who they will probably be able to get in the fourth, or even fifth round, Heeney is a no-risk pick with some nice upside.
