The NFL Draft is full of great stories. Prospects come from all over the place and from many different situations in college. Cameron Erving is one of those guys who underwent a position change that altered the rest of his career for the better.
Erving has gone from being a little known defensive tackle in 2011, to an offensive tackle and even center by the end of his tenure at Florida State. The ability to play multiple positions at a high level along the offensive line is a huge bonus for teams, and it should equal more money for Erving.
He’s not only proven himself as a tackle, but also as a center, earning both first-team All ACC honors at tackle and third-team honors as a center in 2014.
But the downside to players like Erving is experience, or lack thereof. His position changes are ultimately going to bring him to the dance, but the reality is a guy who’s only been playing offensive line for the last three years and center for less than a year.
Either way, the Lions could use his versatility and long-term potential. He’s a player who’s been mocked all over the place, landing in both the first and second rounds. He may be a stretch for Detroit at 23, but it all depends on how many offensive lineman come off the board early.
