44.
Most mock drafts have the Falcons locked in on a pass rusher with the eighth overall pick. Kentucky’s Alvin “Bud” Dupree has become the flavor of the week since Beasley rose out of their reach and Shane Ray saw his stock drop due to a foot injury (as well as a recent misdemeanor marijuana possession arrest) and Randy Gregory’s top 10 hopes dwindled after reports of a failed drug test at the combine.

My thought here is that when you’re just moving on to the next name because you’re so locked in to a team taking a particular position, that’s probably not the best player. I actually like Dupree quite a bit, and would be curious to see how he develops under Head Coach, Dan Quinn, but given that the former Seattle defensive coordinator is known for his work with pass rushers, I think he can find better value on day two. (I’m particularly fond of LSU’s Danielle Hunter early in the second round.)

With the eighth pick, the best player on my board is Iowa’s versatile offensive lineman, Brandon Scherff. The Falcons have a hole at left guard created by the release of veteran Justin Blaylock and Scherff could easily slide in as the day 1 starter. Unlike Blaylock, Scherff is a perfect fit for new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s system and he brings an immediate upgrade as a run blocker for a team that ranked near the bottom of the league in rushing last year.

Scherff also serves a versatile insurance policy for an offensive line that has suffered mightily at the hand of injuries the past two seasons. (Left Tackle Jake Matthews is already dealing with a Lisfranc injury.) Scherff may be best suited to playing gaurd, but he has enough size and athleticism to be successful at tackle if called upon.
