The ‘good pick’ scenario: Danny Shelton, defensive tackle, Washington

The reason I’m including Danny Shelton on here and not guys like Shane Ray or Randy Gregory, is because of off-field issues. Both players have failed drug tests, so I don’t the Giants will be picking either of them, barring a significant drop.

Unlike the aforementioned, troubled players, Shelton has a clean record and a mean style. Nicknamed “Feast Mode,” Shelton is a mastodon of a human being.

Shelton is 6-3 and 339 pounds, and he can flat-out bully offensive linemen. Like the aforementioned Waynes, if the Giants pulled the trigger and took Shelton, he would have time to learn how the NFL works.

Shelton would be joining a defensive line featuring players with a lot of experience. Pairing Shelton with Jonathan Hankins would go a long way in bolstering the Giants run defense that finished 30th in the league last year.

Shelton is very good with his hands, and he’s incredibly athletic for a man of his size. NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks compared Shelton to five-time Pro Bowler Vince Wilfork. Coincidentally enough, Brooks compared Hankins to the same big man.

Let’s not forget the obvious, too, as Spagnuolo’s defenses work best with more talented defensive linemen. The more guys Spags has to rotate in, the better. A player of Shelton’s caliber would give the defensive mastermind even more ammunition to work with.

The Giants would be getting a hard-working, dedicated player with Shelton.
