4. LaDainian Tomlinson, 2006
The third consecutive running back on this ranking is LaDainian Tomlinson and his unbelievable 2006 AP MVP season. The San Diego Chargers’ all-time great put together one of the most impressive seasons in NFL history in 2006 and his greatness will forever be enshrined in southern California’s collective memory. Specifically, his MVP season will be remembered because it was truly something special.
He ran for 1,815 yards and scored 28 touchdowns on the ground in 2006. He also added an incredible 508 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, too. That’s 2,323 total yards and 31 total touchdowns in one 16-game stretch; otherwise known as pure dominance. Although he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and only fumbled the ball twice all year as well. There is literally no blemish on Tomlinson’s 2006 season and that helped him earn the fourth-highest spot on this list.
Few players have ever dominated their positions for an entire year as thoroughly as Tomlinson did in 2006. Some may argue that his jaw-dropping season should be ranked higher than No. 4. Of course in the NFL, the quarterback is king, and the top three spots all belong to future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks.
