Quarterback: Tom Brady (Jimmy Garoppolo for the first four games)

Running back: LaGarrette Blount ( Jonas Gray for the first game)

The QB situation is as clear as it has been over the last decade, if one discounts the first four games. I do believe that Brady might get his suspension reduced, but currently it is at four games so that is what I am going with. Brady is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, and is still playing at an elite level.

I don’t think it matters how well Garoppolo plays in the games that he starts, Brady will return as the starter. So whoever is hoping for a Drew Bledsoe/Brady switch similar to 2001, that will not happen (unless Brady is injured). Garoppolo is still in the grooming process in the Patriots plan of building a new franchise QB, but he will get a chance to show where he is at.

The running back situation is actually a very interesting one for the New England Patriots. The Pats lost both Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen to free agency, and I think the loss of both of them could have an impact. The Patriots have shown that they can get production out of any running back, but this years backfield lacks either experience, skill or both.

Blount will be the official starter after he returns from his one game suspension, but I think it will be wide open for any of the backs to take the bulk of the carries. No matter who starts, the Patriots will probably end up splitting carries between Blount, Gray, and possibly James White or Brandon Bolden.

Shane Vereen was a major player on third down and in the passing game, and his spot must be filled, and the Patriots found a very capable replacement for him. While Cadet only has 11 career carries, he was heavily used in the passing game by the New Orleans Saints last year, and that is the way I expect the Patriots to use them. Last year he had 38 receptions for 298 yards. James White will also be fighting for some third down playing time, as he is a capable receiver with solid running ability.  This position will be something to watch of the next few months and in the preseason.
