Linebackers:

LOLB: Rob Ninkovich, ILB: Dont’a Hightower, ILB: Jerod Mayo, ROLB: Jamie Collins

The usage of Ninkovich and Sheard will be very interesting, because Ninkovich played the left defensive end position over the past few years, but he is more versatile and is better at playing the outside linebacker role. They will try to get both of them on the field as much as possible, but Chandler Jones is definitely guaranteed the most snaps. Outside of Ninkovich, this linebacker corps could be the best in the NFL, greatly depending on how Mayo returns from injury. Hightower really proved how talented he is and how he could lead the defense in Mayo’s absence. He is great against the run, and is also very capable at rushing the passer up the middle on passing downs.

If Mayo makes a full recovery from his second season ending injury in a row, he will regain his role as head of the defense. When healthy, he is  a tackling machine and is all over the field. When playing 4-3, Mayo might be the one moving more the outside as he is quicker and more versatile than Hightower. Jamie Collins is one of the best linebackers in the NFL. There is nothing he can’t do and he can play any linebacker position. He is freakishly athletic, tackles very well, can rush the passer and is quick enough to cover tight ends. Together these linebackers will have to control the game and lead the Patriots defense.
