When it comes to rookie running backs this season, two names are typically going to be mentioned. After an incredible college career, the San Diego Chargers selected Melvin Gordon in the first round of the draft. He has an opportunity for big numbers in the Chargers’ offense, but if you want to get him in fantasy football, you will pay a premium price.
Todd Gurley was taken by the St. Louis Rams with the 10th overall pick in the draft. Gurley is a special talent, but he is recovering from a serious knee injury. I will be staying away from Gurley in my drafts because the price is high, and his knee could easily hold him out for half of the season.
Tevin Coleman is the rookie running back who I will be targeting in fantasy football this season. Coleman was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the draft, and he is entering a RB competition with second-year back Devonta Freeman. Based on talent, Coleman has a huge upper hand over Freeman with his impressive combination of speed and power that he used to dominate on a consistent basis in college.
Falcons’ offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan typically features one running back in his offense. While Freeman will probably still see some kind of role, I find it hard to believe that Shanahan is going to feature him as the main running back over Coleman. When it comes down to it, Coleman’s talent should easily win the job.
With obvious skills, and a coach who likes to feature one specific running back, I think Coleman has big-time upside in the Falcons’ offense. The RB position is very valuable, targeting Coleman in the middle of your draft could prove to be a move that leads you to the promise land.
