Running Back: Jamaal Charles

Fullback: Anthony Sherman

Another couple of obvious starters on the Chiefs’ offense comes in their backfield. With an impressive mixture of raw speed, athleticism and incredible vision, Charles is one of the most talented and productive players at the running back position in the entire league. He is the Chiefs’ most explosive player, a tough runner who can get the important yards and an incredible receiver out of the backfield.

Knile Davis has shown some promise as Charles’ primary back-up, but he is not taking the reigns anytime soon. The Chiefs’ offense has been centered around Charles’ wide array of skills, and I mostly expect that to continue this season.

Leading the way for Charles in the run game is fullback Anthony Sherman, who was a Second-Team All-Pro selection last season. While Sherman does not bring much to the table in the statistic department, his role as Charles’ lead blocker is key in the Chiefs’ offense.

Sherman’s incredible run blocking skills have allowed him to become one the premier players at the fullback position in the NFL. While the position is a bit of a dying breed, the Chiefs clearly put a high value on Sherman, and he deserves a ton of praise for Charles’ big-time success in recent seasons.

While the Chiefs obviously value Sherman in their offense, NFL.com’s Elliot Harrison considered Sherman to be one of the most underrated players in the NFL. Harrison called Sherman “The best player on this list you’ve never heard of.”

Between the superstar in Charles and the unsung hero in Sherman, starting positions in the Chiefs’ backfield are simply not up for grabs.
