The most needed breakout year is from Jake Matthews. Or rather, he needs to just stay healthy. I’ve mentioned before about how Matthews’ dead last overall PFF grade needs to be contextualised.

Aggravating his ankle injury during the week 5 game against the Giants contributed to a brutal 4-game stretch which made up the bulk of his negative PFF grade.

For Matt Ryan’s health, the Falcons need Matthews to avoid injury because they don’t have another serviceable LT on the roster. Before the aggravation and after the bye week, Matthews provided a calm presence from the blindside. He got beat here and there but generally wasn’t getting overwhelmed as much as his predecessors.

However, Matthews might not come back 100% from the Lisfranc injury he suffered week 17. The Falcons’ rumoured heavy interest in Clemson LT Isaiah Battle in the upcoming supplemental draft could mean Matthews isn’t recovering as well as they anticipated.

Or, it could just mean they believe he makes the team better by filling in at another position. Regardless, It is better to be proactive than to be passive and leaving your problems manifest before it’s too late.
