Similarly to the left side the Patriots starting right tackle is an obvious selection. Sebastian Vollmer has gone from being a head-scratching second-round pick by the Patriots in 2009, to one of the best players at the right tackle position in the entire NFL, and he is sure to be the Patriots starting right tackle again this seasons.
There was so much unknown surrounding Vollmer in the draft process, which is probably why there was so much confusion with the pick. Vollmer had impressive athleticism and power that was certainly intriguing, but his skills were very raw. Obviously, Belichick and legendary Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia saw something in Vollmer, selected him and then molded him into the player he has become.
Vollmer is a mauling right tackle who is a great run blocker and good in pass protection. He probably does not have quick enough feet to ever move to the left side, but that is okay, because Vollmer has found a home at right tackle.
Injuries have been an issue throughout Vollmer’s career, and if that were to continue this season, Cannon would also probably be the first in line for snaps on the right side. That being said, Fleming brings nice depth to the position, and probably has more upside than Cannon.
