SS Major Wright

While Conte has yet to play a snap for the Buccaneers, Wright took 520 of them, per PFF, last season and about an average starting player in his first season with the team. But average was a necessary upgrade for the Bucs, and Wright proved to be an adequate player at either free or strong safety. He figures to be the third safety and an insurance policy in case McDougald’s 2014 season was merely a mirage or, more likely, in case Conte gets injured (I tentatively trust Wright as a free safety more than I trust Keith Tandy, even if the latter player has more upside).

Wright finished the 2014 season with 51 tackles, and even though he had just one pass defended, he clearly fared out better in coverage than he did as a member of the Bears in his disastrous 2013 campaign. He’s a decent veteran to have around, and the Bucs have him in his ideal spot as a third safety, so it wasn’t surprising to see them re-sign him before free agency opened up.
