3. Baltimore Ravens Defense

Overall, the defense played well against the Saints in week 1. Yet, the Eagles are a whole different animal with their no-huddle, fast paced offensive scheme. Many said and continue to say Chip Kelly’s non-traditional offensive idea doesn’t work, but it clearly has worked in the past two seasons and did against the Colts. It requires an extra level of fitness, but it’s nothing that the Eagles can’t prepare for during the offseason and preseason training sessions and more emphasis on healthy eating, which is something Kelly has addressed since he was brought in to replace Andy Reid.

For the Ravens and any opposing defense, the need to stay alert and not take their time getting re-set after the play is crucial. The true fitness level of the Ravens defense will be clearly evident as the Eagles hurriedly rush back to the line of scrimmage. It’s a guaranteed the Ravens players will be breathing heavily, but it will be interesting to see if they can dig in and stay focus play after play despite the quick pace.

Another area the Ravens need to improve is with turnovers. Last week, they failed to intercept a pass or get a fumble, while the Saints intercepted to passes. Turnover margin is an important stat during the season and it’s imperative the Ravens defense do their part during the preseason to lay a solid foundation.

Philadelphia’s receiving core showed they belong in the NFL on Sunday against the Colts and it doesn’t appear that was a fluke either. If Baltimore’s defense isn’t on their A game from the opening whistle, then it could be a long game for the team. Despite it being a preseason game, this game will be meaningful to see how the defense plays and see just how good they are against a dynamic rushing and passing team.
